stuff!

Hey peeps!

The last couple days have rocked. On Monday night I was part of a video crew that taped a poetry reading at Barnard (the all-girl version of Columbia...which is right across the street), and that was a bit hectic. At first I showed up all cool, I was strapping the bestest camera there and had mad street cred (being a part of PBC and all). It was business as usual and I set up. With one of the camera guys' help, I learned a little bit about shutter speed and its effect on the HVX's image. Then the actual taping began.
I had a random error right off the bat. The camera would tape for three seconds and then locked up - something I've never had to deal with on any camera, ever. Let me tell ya, I STUDIED the manual for this one before I ever turned on the camera, and there was nothing I could recall that ever mentioned this. It was a straight up real-world issue that I had to deal with...luckily the sound guy was there to help out. We ejected the DV tape and put it back in - and this fixed the lock-up. Of course, by then the presentation was about 5 minutes in, but with two other cameras rolling (and one getting a sound feed), they were totally covered.
I also learned that for event coverage, using manual focus and/or the zoom ring is OUT. Auto-focusing is not only easier, but doing any pans to areas where the focus changes, it's freakin mandatory. Switching from the zoom ring to servo-zoom helps tremendously for smooth zooming. My zooms looked like crap.

All in all it was a positive learning experience - and the camera earned some dough towards its rent.

On Tuesday Z and I interviewed MC Lars - the self-styled "laptop rapper" who has been cited by many as a part of the NerdCore scene for years and years. He himself said that non-nerds who listen to it are mainly drawn out of novelty, which is hella true. It was great to listen to a really smart guy talk plainly about the genre that he's a part of without any reservations. In 2008, he predicted Paris Hilton will release a nerdcore song. On that day, we'll all have to shoot ourselves.

So the Attourney General of Utah just released a pro-gaming PSA that explains the ESRB ratings system (a system that WORKS). Check it out here.

Unfortunately for America, this is one of the only postivie political statements you'll hear about videogames this year. Even our own senator Clinton is drawing up legislation that'll make it harder on developers and even retail stores to sell violent videogames - which is retarded. Parents, don't let your kids play Mature-rated games! That's all there is to it.

dude!

haaaaaaaah....what a great day.

I PA'd on a screen test for an upcoming movie called "Rise of the Dark" or something along those lines. It's a magical teen movie that's being filmed in Romania by 20th Century Fox; the director had to decide on his lead boy, so they shot a couple things to help him figure it out. We had a couple teen actors do four different shots, each with "zany apartment" or "dark christmas tree" flavor. Because of the small crew, I got to know everybody by name, and some truly appreciated our ass-busting, especially when it came to lunch time. Usually the moans and groans are totally audible when it comes to food, but even with our small lunch budget, this crew didn't compain one bit. It must either be that we're only working together for one day, or that they're simply talented professionals. I'm happy either way.

It felt really good to PA again. I've been doing Locations for so long that the possibility of my PA skillz atrophying was seriously on my mind during the last couple films. Not only are they totally back, but I felt like I had more fun than I've had in awhile on a set. There was little to no stress, which reflects on our easy location and the short subject material. I hung out with Javier and Melody from P.S. I <3 You, forming a Triumverate of Team Terriffic.

Have you checked out the PBC forums yet?

. . . aaaaannndd.....

...

and that's how I found out that CTRL + S in Blogger means "Publish!"

MAGfest...Captain S premiere was great. Everybody dug it, even people who prefaced their congradulatory compliments with "I never really liked SEGA" were into our show - which means to me that Ultimate Victory was indeed achieved. We connected with our fanbase for the show, and they ate it up. Yaaay!

I did everything I set out to this year, including:

drinking / catching up with good friends

rocking out hard at the concert (!!!!!!holycrap WaveTheory!!!!)

premiering Captain S after some last-minute editing in the hotel room {shhh!}

caught the premiere of some long-awaited projects

videogames

met some new friends~!

All in all it was the most satisfying weekend, ever.

sigh... I love MAGfest.

NOW CHECK OUT THE 50 + IMAGE DUMP!!
Today is a day of recovery from MAGfest 5.

I'll give the highlights along with these pictures. Like a blogpost or something. Meh, I've been so neglecting this blog since PBC arose into my life! The good thing is that my real life is so busy that I've had no time to update this, but the GOOD THING is that I'm going to make a more concerted effort to post at least something from now on.

Sorry for the lack up updates, Internet, but things are going just fine!

Tuesday I work on a screen test with Javier, ringing in my first PA work for the new year!
It's seriously been awhile since I've been a PA...locations had consumed me for awhile. I just know it'll be fun to step back and be able to save the day once again.

3am ramblings

hey all.

I've been pouring my heart and soul (literally, like with a strainer and everything) into PBC Productions. You should really check the site; Z slaved over her laptop for two straight days making it, and it's a thing of beauty. We're all very proud.

SEE! the NEW! Captain S trailer with kickass original music by Glenn Case!
BE ASTOUNDED! at the sweet interactivity of website!

MAG is less than 2 days away, and we're cutting it very close, as usual. I promised myself that we would plan better, that we'd leave enough time for Post and that everything would wrap itself up at least a day before we left...but alas. The DVD will burn with just hours to spare before we leave Thursday morning.

The first videogame section of our series, aka The Climax of every episode, looks great, and Devon is making it sound amazing as we speak. Or rather, as I type and you read later. Just know that right now, someone is doing something amazing in the name of PBC. The shark, we're jump-kicking it.

Watch out, world! Here we come...in a hatchback!
